Budapest - Queen of the Danube

Monday, 11 July 2011 18:23 Sylvia General Information

Most of the tourists visiting Hungary come to Budapest first, although Lake Balaton is an equally popular destination. Budapest is a heart-stealer, one of Europe’s most delightful cities. It has all the luxury of Western Europe with a Hungarian twist at half the cost. This is the city that toes the line between "Eastern" and "Western" European culture. This gorgeous city is filled with wonderful restaurants, fantastic churches, fine museums, breathtaking architecture, lively arts, cafe and a vibrant music scene.

It also acts as host to a wide range of cultural and sporting festivals.  We can safely say that Budapest is a Fun and Festive City. Every season has its own festivals so visitors to Budapest always have plenty of cultural programs to choose from throughout the year. The end of the year is a fun time, when visitors can experience the Christmas Fair and the New Year’s Eve street party. Check out our Events Calendar and find the perfect programs that will complement your holiday in Budapest.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, was formed in 1873, when three different towns – Buda, Pest and Óbuda – united resulting to the birth of today’s cosmopolitan Budapest which is affectionately known as the "Queen of the Danube". Geographically, Budapest is situated on both banks of the Danube, so it shapes the city, with industrial Pest on the right bank and hilly, historic Buda on the left bank and Óbuda on the outer edges of the city. The area has been successively ruled by many different cultures – Celts, Romans, Mongols, Germans, Austrians, just to name a few. The mark of each nations remains on the Hungarian capital in cobbled streets, hidden courtyards, Turkish baths and old-world architecture. Budapest is not only the centre of administration but also that of industry, trade, transport, traffic, education, culture, arts and sports for the vast nation of Hungary.

Budapest has a favorable climate throughout the year but the best time to visit is between March and the end of June and from the middle of August until October. July is generally very hot.  Verdant islands such as Margitsziget (Margaret Island) and Óbudai-sziget are popular Budapest attractions on the Danube. These islands are the best places to go for a romantic walk amongst the trees and locating hidden places which lovers will find seducing and irresistibly romantic.  You can enjoy an excellent picnic on the lawns amongst the beautifully kept flowers and some sun down cooling drinks at one of the fashionable bars.

This website can serve you as a guide of the main sights of Budapest, this vibrant city, full of music festivals of every genre especially in the summer.  So why not go on a self discovery of the city and enjoy the warm embrace of adventure of the city and its warm and friendly people.  Hungarians are known for their exceptional hospitality.
