Lupa Beach: Budapest’s Closest Thing to the Sea

Who says Budapest doesn’t have a beach? Just a short drive from the city center, Lupa Beach feels surprisingly different from the Budapest most visitors expect. Crystal-clear water, white sand, palm trees and beach bars create an atmosphere that’s much closer to a seaside resort than a former gravel pit on the outskirts of the city.

For me, though, Lupa Beach is much more than a trendy summer destination.

Long before the beach opened in 2017, this was one of my favorite places to spend hot summer days. As a child, I often came here with my mom and her partner when the lake was little more than a hidden swimming spot known mostly by locals, surfers and anglers. Years later, I even brought my dog here for long swims on quiet summer afternoons.

Seeing how this forgotten lake has transformed into one of Budapest’s most popular beach destinations has been fascinating. While much has changed, the crystal-clear water that made this place so special has remained exactly the same.

From Hidden Quarry Lake to Budapest’s Beach

Long before beach clubs, cocktails and palm trees arrived, Lupa was something completely different.

The lake was created after decades of gravel mining, and once the excavation ended, crystal-clear groundwater gradually filled the former quarry. Over time, nature reclaimed the area, creating one of the clearest lakes around Budapest.

For years, there was no official beach, no restaurants and no tourist facilities. Locals came here simply because they loved the water. Anglers appreciated its rich fish population, surfers found ideal conditions on windy days, and adventurous swimmers enjoyed one of Budapest’s best-kept summer secrets.

That’s exactly how I remember it from my childhood.

There were no sunbeds or beach bars back then. We packed everything we needed for the day, found a quiet spot by the lake and spent hours swimming in the incredibly clear water.

When Lupa Beach officially opened in 2017, the lake began an entirely new chapter. What was once a hidden local secret gradually became one of Hungary’s most modern beach destinations, while thankfully keeping the one thing that made it special in the first place: its beautifully clear water.

What to Expect at Lupa Beach

Today, it’s hard to imagine that this used to be a quiet quarry lake.

Lupa Beach has become one of Hungary’s most popular summer destinations, offering a resort-like atmosphere just minutes from Budapest. White sand, comfortable sunbeds, palm trees and crystal-clear water create a setting that feels surprisingly Mediterranean.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day or a more active getaway, there’s plenty to do. You can simply swim and soak up the sun, or try water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and sailing. Families will also find plenty of entertainment for children, while sports lovers can enjoy beach volleyball and other outdoor activities.

One of the things I like most is that you can easily spend an entire day here. Start with a morning swim, enjoy lunch at one of the beach restaurants, cool off in the lake again during the afternoon, and finish the day with a cocktail while watching the sun slowly set over the water.

I’ve also experienced Lupa Beach from a completely different perspective. Some summer evenings, my husband’s Cuban band performed at one of the beach bars, adding Caribbean rhythms to an already holiday-like atmosphere. For a few hours, it almost felt as if Budapest had its own little tropical seaside.

How to Get to Lupa Beach

One of the best things about Lupa Beach is how easy it is to reach from Budapest.

By car, the beach is around a 20-minute drive from the city center, depending on traffic. If you’re using public transport, take the H5 HÉV suburban railway towards Szentendre and get off at Budakalász. From there, it’s about a 20-minute walk, or you can hop on the seasonal Lupa shuttle bus that operates during the summer.

If you’re staying in downtown Budapest, there is also a direct seasonal shuttle bus from the city center on selected days, making the journey even more convenient.

My Tips for Visiting Lupa Beach

  • Arrive early on sunny weekends, especially during July and August, as it gets very busy.
  • If you’re planning to stay all day, renting a sunbed is worth considering.
  • Bring swim shoes if you want to explore areas outside the main sandy beach.
  • Check the official website before your visit for current opening hours, ticket prices and special events.
  • If you’re looking for a quieter experience, visit on a weekday or outside the peak summer season.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends or as a family, Lupa Beach is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a beach day without leaving Budapest behind.

Final Thoughts

Lupa Beach has been part of my life for much longer than its name suggests.

I remember it as a hidden quarry lake where we spent carefree summer days with my mom long before anyone imagined beach clubs, palm trees or white sand. Years later, I returned with my dog, and later still with my Cuban husband, who performed here with his band on some summer evenings.

Looking back, it’s amazing how much this place has changed while somehow keeping the same relaxed atmosphere that made people fall in love with it in the first place.

If you’re visiting Budapest during the warmer months and feel like escaping the city without travelling too far, Lupa Beach is one of the best places to spend a summer day.

Sometimes, all you need is crystal-clear water, a little sunshine and the feeling that, for a few hours at least, you’re on holiday.
