If someone told me I only had one day to spend at Lake Balaton, I wouldn’t try to see everything. That would be impossible anyway. Instead, I’d choose one small area, slow down, and actually enjoy it. For me, Tihany is one of those places.
It has everything that makes Lake Balaton special: beautiful views, charming little streets, centuries of history, good food, local wine and just the right excuse to wander around without constantly checking the time.
This isn’t a guide to every corner of Lake Balaton. It’s simply how I would spend one really good day there.

Start Your Day in Tihany
If you’re only spending one day at Lake Balaton, I’d start early and head straight to Tihany. Perched on a peninsula overlooking the lake, it’s one of those places where you can easily spend hours without ever feeling like you’re in a hurry.
The heart of the village is the Benedictine Abbey, founded nearly a thousand years ago by King Andrew I. Besides its beautiful Baroque church, the abbey is also home to Hungary’s oldest surviving written words, found in the founding charter dating back to 1055.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in history, it’s worth stepping inside. The abbey has been thoughtfully restored over the years, and the panoramic views from the hill are just as impressive as the building itself.
Afterwards, don’t rush back to your car. One of the nicest things to do in Tihany is simply wander through the little streets, browse the small artisan shops, and stop whenever something catches your eye. Sometimes that’s the best part of the day.

Don’t Miss Tihany’s Famous Lavender
It’s almost impossible to talk about Tihany without mentioning lavender.
If you happen to visit during the blooming season, usually around June, the hillsides turn purple and the whole village seems to fill with its unmistakable scent. It’s one of the most photographed places around Lake Balaton, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

Even if you visit outside the flowering season, lavender is still part of Tihany’s identity. You’ll find small shops selling locally made lavender products, from soaps and essential oils to chocolates and handmade souvenirs. It’s a nice way to take a little piece of Tihany home without filling your suitcase with magnets you’ll probably never look at again.
If you’re lucky enough to be here during the annual lavender harvest, you may even be able to pick your own bouquet. The dates vary each year depending on the weather, so it’s worth checking the local event calendar before your trip.

After exploring Tihany, continue your day in Balatonfüred.
If you’re visiting during the boating season, I highly recommend taking one of the scheduled passenger boats across the lake instead of driving. The short ride between Tihany and Balatonfüred offers beautiful views of the shoreline and adds a little extra to the day before you continue exploring. Scheduled boats operate between the two towns from spring through autumn, with more frequent departures during the summer season.
If you’re traveling outside the sailing season, it’s an easy drive of around 20 minutes.
End the Day with a Glass of Local Wine
After arriving in Balatonfüred, there was only one way I wanted to end the day. With a glass of local wine.
The Balaton region has become one of Hungary’s best-known wine destinations, and Balatonfüred is home to several excellent wineries. During our visit, we stopped at Figula Winery, a family-owned estate that has been producing wines in the Balaton Highlands for decades.
I have to admit, I’m no wine expert. I simply know what I enjoy. Luckily, that’s usually enough.
The tasting gave us the chance to try several local wines while learning a little more about the region’s winemaking traditions. It was relaxed, unpretentious and exactly the kind of experience that fit perfectly after a day spent exploring Lake Balaton.
And yes, my husband approved too. Considering he’s a chef and not easily impressed when it comes to food and drinks, I’ll take that as a very good sign.
If you’re planning to visit, it’s worth checking Figula’s website in advance. Guided wine tastings at the winery usually require a reservation, while the seasonal Figula Wine Garden offers a more casual way to enjoy a glass of wine with beautiful views over the vineyards.

Final Thoughts
If you only have one day to explore Lake Balaton, don’t try to see everything. Pick one area, take your time and enjoy it.
That’s exactly what makes places like Tihany and Balatonfüred so special.
You’ll discover history, beautiful scenery, local food, great wine and plenty of little moments that don’t usually make it into travel guides but somehow become the memories you keep.
Sometimes one good day is all it takes to make you want to come back. And if that happens, don’t worry. It means you’ve experienced Lake Balaton the way many Hungarians do.
