If you’ve ever searched for the most beautiful café in Budapest, you’ve probably come across New York Café. And if you’ve walked past it, you’ve probably noticed something else too: the long queue stretching along the sidewalk. That raises the obvious question. Is it really worth waiting for a coffee and a slice of cake?
We decided to find out when we celebrated my 50th birthday there with my mom and my Cuban husband. We visited without a reservation and, not surprisingly, ended up sitting on the lower level instead of the magnificent main floor where the live music was playing.
Did that ruin the experience? Not at all.
Because the moment I stepped inside, I understood why New York Café has become one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks.

Why Is New York Café So Famous?
New York Café Budapest isn’t just another beautiful coffeehouse. It’s a symbol of Budapest’s Golden Age, a time when the city was rapidly transforming into one of Europe’s great capitals.
When it first opened in 1894, cafés were much more than places to enjoy coffee and cake. They were the social and intellectual heart of the city, where writers, poets, journalists and artists met to exchange ideas, debate politics and create some of Hungary’s greatest literary works.
New York Café soon became one of the most prestigious meeting places in Budapest. Over the years, countless famous Hungarian writers and artists passed through its doors, helping to shape the city’s rich cultural life.
One of my favorite stories is the famous legend that playwright Ferenc Molnár celebrated the café’s opening by throwing its keys into the Danube, hoping it would never have to close. Whether the story is true or not hardly matters. It perfectly captures the spirit of a place that has become part of Budapest’s identity.
Today, New York Café Budapest welcomes visitors from all over the world. While the conversations around the tables may have changed, stepping inside still feels like traveling back to the elegance and grandeur of turn-of-the-century Budapest.
Stepping Inside the World’s Most Beautiful Café
The moment you walk through the doors, it’s easy to understand why New York Café Budapest has earned its worldwide reputation.
Crystal chandeliers sparkle overhead, marble columns rise toward richly decorated ceilings, gilded details catch the light from every angle, and spectacular frescoes make it difficult to know where to look first.
I have to admit that I spent more time looking up than at the menu.

Even though we were seated downstairs, I couldn’t resist wandering through the café to admire every room. Every corner seemed to reveal another beautiful detail, whether it was an ornate staircase, an elegant balcony or yet another breathtaking ceiling.
This isn’t just a place to have coffee and cake. It’s a place to slow down, soak up the atmosphere and imagine what Budapest must have felt like during its golden age.
If you appreciate historic architecture and beautiful interiors as much as I do, chances are you’ll leave with a full camera roll long before you finish your dessert. It’s easily one of the most photogenic indoor locations in Budapest.

Is New York Café Budapest Worth the Wait?
If you’re looking for Budapest’s best coffee or the city’s finest cake, the answer is probably no.
But that’s also missing the point.
You don’t come to New York Café for the food alone. You come for the experience of sitting inside one of the world’s most beautiful cafés, surrounded by marble, chandeliers, gilded ceilings and more than a century of history.
Yes, there’s often a long queue outside, and yes, prices are higher than at a typical Budapest café. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply don’t want to wait, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance.
We visited without one and were seated on the lower level rather than in the magnificent main hall where the live piano music was playing. Of course, I was a tiny bit disappointed. But only for about five minutes.
I soon found myself wandering through the café, admiring every detail and taking far more photos than I probably needed. By the time our coffee and cake arrived, I had completely forgotten where we were sitting.
So, is it worth the wait? For me, yes.
Not because it served the best dessert I’ve ever had, but because spending an afternoon in a place like this is an experience that’s hard to find anywhere else.
My Tips for Visiting New York Café Budapest
If you’re planning to visit New York Café, here are a few tips that can make the experience even better.
Make a reservation if you can. While walk-ins are welcome, the queue outside can be surprisingly long, especially during peak tourist season. Booking ahead gives you a much better chance of getting a table without a lengthy wait.
Take your time. Don’t just sit down, have a coffee and leave. Walk around, admire the architecture and look up. Some of the café’s most beautiful details are above your head.
Go for the atmosphere, not just the food. The coffee and cakes are enjoyable, but what you’re really paying for is the chance to experience one of Budapest’s most iconic interiors.
Bring your camera. Whether you’re using a professional camera or just your phone, New York Café is one of the city’s most photogenic indoor locations.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably leave with far more photos than you originally planned.
Final Thoughts
Some places become famous because they’re beautiful. Others become memorable because of the moments you experience there.
For me, New York Café will always be both.
If you’re visiting Budapest for the first time, I think it’s absolutely worth stepping inside at least once. Just come with the right expectations. You’re not simply paying for a coffee or a slice of cake, you’re experiencing one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a little piece of Budapest’s golden age.
