Párisi Udvar Budapest: The City’s Most Beautiful Hidden Gem

Some of my favorite places in Budapest aren’t the ones everyone talks about. Párisi Udvar Budapest is one of them. Long before it became a luxury hotel, it was already part of my childhood. My mom and I loved spending Sunday afternoons wandering around downtown Budapest, and somehow we always ended up passing through this beautiful passage.

Years later, I returned on a guided tour after its spectacular restoration, and seeing the building brought back so many memories. At the same time, I discovered countless fascinating details that I had never noticed before.

Today, Párisi Udvar is one of Budapest’s most breathtaking architectural masterpieces. And the best part? You don’t have to book a room to step inside and admire it.

A Building That Keeps Reinventing Itself

One of the things I find most fascinating about Párisi Udvar Budapest is that it has never stopped evolving.

It began life as one of Hungary’s very first modern shopping arcades, inspired by the elegant covered passages of Paris. Later, it became the headquarters of the Downtown Savings Bank before serving very different purposes during the socialist era. For many Hungarians, the legendary Jégbüfé, a beloved ice cream and pastry shop, remains one of the building’s most cherished memories.

After decades of decline and years hidden behind scaffolding, the building finally reopened in 2019 following an extraordinary restoration.

Today, Párisi Udvar has found a new life as a luxury hotel. But the best news for visitors is that you don’t need to stay overnight to experience its beauty. The spectacular arcade, elegant cafés, restaurants and public spaces are open to everyone, making it one of Budapest’s most accessible architectural treasures.

Stepping Inside Párisi Udvar Budapest

The first thing you’ll probably notice is the light. Sunlight pours through the spectacular glass ceiling, reflecting off colorful stained glass, polished marble, intricate mosaics and gilded details. Everywhere you look, there’s another beautiful piece of craftsmanship waiting to be discovered.

What I love most about Párisi Udvar is that it rewards curiosity. Slow down, look up, look down, and don’t rush through the passage. The more time you spend here, the more details you’ll notice.

I was lucky enough to explore the building on a guided tour, which made me appreciate it even more. Learning about the symbolism, the craftsmanship and the incredible restoration gave me a completely new perspective on a place I thought I already knew.

Today, visitors are welcome to walk through the magnificent arcade, enjoy a coffee or lunch beneath the soaring glass dome, and admire one of Budapest’s most extraordinary architectural treasures, even if they’re not staying at the hotel.

Look Closer: The Details That Make Párisi Udvar Extraordinary

One of the reasons Párisi Udvar feels so different from any other building in Budapest is that it refuses to fit into a single architectural style.

Designed by Henrik Schmahl, the building combines Neo-Gothic, Moorish and Art Nouveau influences in a way that somehow feels perfectly harmonious. Pointed arches stand beside oriental-inspired patterns, colorful ceramic details meet elegant stained glass, and almost every surface is decorated with extraordinary craftsmanship.

One detail that particularly caught my attention during the guided tour was learning that not all of the famous ceramic decorations came from the Zsolnay factory, as many people believe. While Zsolnay pieces are certainly part of the building, several decorative elements were also produced by renowned German manufacturers. It’s a small detail, but one that reveals just how ambitious and international this project was over a century ago.

Another highlight is the magnificent stained glass, created by the legendary Miksa Róth, whose work can also be admired in many of Budapest’s most iconic buildings.

No matter how many photos you take, I have a feeling you’ll still notice something new the next time you visit.

Can Anyone Visit Párisi Udvar?

Absolutely. One of the best things about Párisi Udvar is that you don’t have to book a room to experience its beauty. Although the building is now home to a five-star luxury hotel, the magnificent passage is open to visitors.

Feel free to step inside, take your time, admire the architecture and enjoy the atmosphere. You can also stop for a coffee, dessert or a meal at one of the elegant restaurants and cafés beneath the spectacular glass dome.

If you’d like to discover the building beyond its beautiful façade, I highly recommend joining a guided tour. That’s how I experienced Párisi Udvar, and learning the stories behind the architecture made me appreciate it on a completely different level.

Whether you spend ten minutes wandering through the passage or linger over coffee while taking in the surroundings, Párisi Udvar Budapest is one of those places that deserves more than just a quick glance.
