There’s something special about Budapest in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The streets light up, shop windows get dressed for the season, and festive decorations bring a special atmosphere to the city. Add a few beautifully decorated squares, a ride on the festive light tram and perhaps an evening at the ice rink, and you have plenty of reasons to enjoy the city at this time of year.
Whether you’re visiting Budapest for a few days or spending Christmas here, there’s more to the festive season than browsing the Christmas markets. From seasonal concerts and spectacular light displays to winter activities and traditional Hungarian treats, here’s what to see and do in Budapest around Christmas.
Christmas Markets in Budapest
No Christmas visit to Budapest would be complete without a stroll around one of its Christmas markets. The smell of mulled wine, chimney cake and freshly prepared Hungarian street food fills the air, while wooden stalls offer everything from handmade decorations to local crafts and festive gifts.
The markets are also a great place to sample some Hungarian seasonal treats, warm up with a hot drink and soak up the Christmas atmosphere. Some are right in the heart of the city, while others are a little further off the usual tourist trail.
Wondering which ones are worth visiting? Take a look at my guide to the best Christmas markets in Budapest for locations, opening dates and everything you need to know before you go.

Where to See Christmas Lights in Budapest
One of the nicest things about Budapest in December is seeing the city dressed up for Christmas. Streets, squares and shopfronts sparkle with festive lights, and even an ordinary evening walk can turn into a little sightseeing tour. If you’re wondering where to see Christmas lights in Budapest, here are a few places worth adding to your list.
Fashion Street, the stretch of Deák Ferenc utca running from Deák Ferenc Square towards Vörösmarty Square, is one of the best-known spots for Christmas decorations in the city centre. Every year, the street gets a festive makeover, with eye-catching decorations and plenty of photo opportunities.

For another lovely spot to enjoy Budapest’s Christmas lights, head to Batthyány Square on the Buda side of the Danube. The surrounding streets are often decorated with strings of festive lights, creating a charming atmosphere. It’s easy to get there by metro (M2), and you can combine your visit with a walk along the river, where you’ll get a beautiful view of the illuminated Parliament across the water.
Of course, some of Budapest’s most beautiful landmarks look particularly magical at this time of year. Fisherman’s Bastion is worth visiting after dark, when the illuminated architecture creates a wonderful backdrop for photos of the city.
Another Christmas sight worth seeing is Hungary’s National Christmas Tree in Kossuth Square, right in front of the Parliament. Every year, a large Christmas tree donated by a Hungarian family is brought here and decorated with thousands of lights. It’s a beautiful festive sight, and the impressive Parliament building makes an equally stunning backdrop for photos.
For a different perspective, take a ride on the Budapest Eye in Erzsébet Square. The giant Ferris wheel offers lovely views over the city centre, and during the Christmas season, you can admire Budapest’s festive lights from above. It’s especially beautiful after dark, when the illuminated streets and landmarks create a magical cityscape.
Christmas Concerts and Shows in Budapest
If you’re in Budapest during the festive season, why not add a concert or a special performance to your Christmas plans? From timeless classical music to spectacular circus shows, the city offers plenty of ways to get into the holiday spirit.
The Nutcracker at the Hungarian State Opera
No Christmas season feels quite complete without The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s much-loved ballet is a festive favorite, and the Hungarian State Opera presents its own production between November 19, 2026, and January 10, 2027. The beautiful Opera House makes the experience even more special.
Check the performance dates and book your tickets.
Recirquel: Kristály at Millenáris
For something a little different, don’t miss Kristály, a magical contemporary circus performance by the Hungarian company Recirquel. Combining acrobatics, visual effects and a fairytale atmosphere, it’s a wonderful choice for both children and adults. The 2026 winter performances take place at Millenáris between December 4 and 31.

Christmas Concerts at Müpa and the Hungarian State Opera
Budapest’s concert halls also get into the festive spirit. On December 17, the Hungarian National Philharmonic presents a Christmas concert at Müpa, featuring works by Bach, Schumann and Honegger. The Hungarian State Opera also has a special Advent program combining Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Messiah, with performances between December 20 and 23.
If classical music is your thing, these are lovely ways to spend an evening in Budapest during the Christmas season.

Christmas Concerts at Budapest’s Churches
For a more intimate and atmospheric musical experience, head to one of Budapest’s beautiful churches. Both St. Stephen’s Basilica and Matthias Church host classical music concerts during the festive season, offering a lovely way to enjoy the city’s musical traditions in two of its most impressive historic settings.
St. Stephen’s Basilica features Advent organ concerts with works by composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart. At Matthias Church, a special Christmas concert on December 19, 2026, includes works by Bach and Charpentier, including Charpentier’s Midnight Mass for Christmas.

Best Places to Go Ice Skating in Budapest
Ice skating is one of the loveliest winter activities in Budapest, and it feels even more special around Christmas. Imagine gliding across the ice with Vajdahunyad Castle in the background, skating along a winding ice corridor surrounded by festive lights, or stopping for a cup of mulled wine after a few rounds.
The iconic City Park Ice Rink is a must if you’re visiting Budapest for the first time, but there are several other places worth checking out, too. Some offer a more local atmosphere, while others have fun features that make skating a little more exciting.

Christmas Food and Drinks in Budapest

Follow the smell of freshly baked chimney cake, grab a lángos, or warm up with a cup of mulled wine while exploring the festive stalls.
You’ll also come across traditional Hungarian dishes and hearty winter favorites at some of the markets. Visit Varázsliget in City Park
Families visiting Budapest with children may also enjoy Varázsliget, a festive event held next to Vajdahunyad Castle in City Park. Take a Ride on the Santa Claus Express
For a different kind of winter adventure, head to the Buda Hills and hop aboard the Santa Claus Express on the Children’s Railway. On December 5–6, 2026, the festive train brings children along for a scenic ride through the forest, with a chance to meet Santa Claus and his helpers along the way.
Even outside the special Santa Claus event, the Children’s Railway runs beautifully decorated Christmas carriages during Advent, making an ordinary train ride feel a little more festive.
Check the Children’s Railway’s event information.
Ride Budapest’s Christmas Trams
One of the simplest and most charming ways to enjoy Budapest during the festive season is to hop on one of its famous Christmas trams. Covered in thousands of sparkling lights, these illuminated trams travel along selected routes across the city, turning an ordinary journey into a festive experience.

What Is Open in Budapest at Christmas?
Christmas in Budapest is a little different from the rest of the year, so it’s worth planning ahead if you’re visiting between December 24 and 26.
Christmas Eve (December 24) is generally a quiet day in Budapest. In 2026, it is currently scheduled as a day off under Hungary’s adjusted work calendar, and a proposal to make it an official public holiday is still under consideration. Most shops close, many attractions operate shorter hours or remain closed, and public transport follows a special holiday schedule. Check opening hours in advance, especially if you plan to go shopping or visit museums.
Christmas Day and December 26 are public holidays in Hungary. Most shops and many museums remain closed, but Budapest is far from completely shut down. Some thermal baths, the Christmas markets, the Zoo, the Budapest Eye and seasonal attractions such as Lumina Park may still welcome visitors, often with special holiday opening hours.
Restaurants have their own holiday schedules, and many independent places close for Christmas. If you’re planning to eat out, it’s worth checking opening hours and making a reservation in advance.
A little planning goes a long way: check the official opening hours of the places you want to visit, and look up the BKK public transport holiday schedule before setting off.
Where to Enjoy Christmas Dinner in Budapest
If you’re spending Christmas in Budapest and would like to enjoy a special dinner, it’s worth making arrangements in advance. Many restaurants close for the holidays, but there are still a few options to consider.
Christmas Dinner Cruises on the Danube
A Christmas dinner cruise is one way to combine a festive meal with some of the best views in Budapest. Imagine enjoying dinner while sailing past the illuminated Parliament, Buda Castle and the city’s beautiful riverfront. Check the available Christmas Eve and Christmas Day departures, as not all cruises operate during the holidays.
Christmas Dinner at a Hotel
Another option is to book a festive dinner at one of Budapest’s larger hotels. Some hotel restaurants offer special Christmas menus or holiday buffets, making them a convenient choice if you’re visiting the city over the holidays. Reservations are usually essential, so check the hotel’s official website for its Christmas dining offers before making plans.
