Budapest has inspired some truly beautiful travel quotes — and once you visit, you’ll understand why. Even Anthony Bourdain, who had seen much of the world, was struck by the city’s beauty:
“They said that of course, Budapest is beautiful. But it is in fact almost ludicrously beautiful.”
And honestly, he wasn’t exaggerating.
With its 19th-century elegance, a rich mix of Baroque, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau architecture, and landmarks that seem to glow in the golden hour, Budapest is one of those cities that quietly exceeds expectations.

Divided by the Danube, the Hungarian capital shows two very different faces. Buda, with its rolling hills and the historic Buda Castle District, offers breathtaking panoramic views. Pest, on the other hand, is flat, vibrant, and full of life — with its buzzing nightlife, cafés, and ruin bars.
Quotes that capture the spirit of Budapest
Here are some of my favorite quotes that perfectly reflect the charm, contrasts, and character of the city:
“I love Budapest for all the right reasons – architecture (especially Art Nouveau), romance (particularly the views from the bridges) and sticky apricot jam – and some of the wrong ones, too – killer pálinka, rickety trolleybuses, and spending way too much time in the Turkish baths.”
— Steve Fallon
“If you come from Paris to Budapest you think you are in Moscow. But if you go from Moscow to Budapest you think you are in Paris.”
— György Ligeti
“Europe’s most underrated big city, Budapest can be as challenging as it is enchanting.”
— Rick Steves
“Budapest is a prime site for dreams: the East’s exuberant vision of the West, the West’s uneasy hallucination of the East.”
— M. John Harrison
“But best of all I loved the Castle Hill District of Buda. I never tired of its ancient streets…”
— Antal Szerb

“Budapest in late May is a city of lilacs… a city of lovers.”
— Joyce Carol Oates
“In Budapest, you’ll find experiences like nothing else in Europe… soaking in thermal baths surrounded by opulent domes.”
— Rick Steves
“One thing that hasn’t changed… is the Hungarian affection for taking the waters — marinating in thermal baths.”
— Anthony Bourdain

“Of course it’s not all foie gras and fine wines… there are other pleasures, just as awesome.”
— Anthony Bourdain
“In Budapest, I always had questions. What is your signature dish? They said goulash…”
— Tia Mowry

“I live in Budapest and saw how football helped the Hungarian people to be happy.”
— Lothar Matthäus
“Straddling the Danube River… Budapest is a gem of a city.”
— Lonely Planet
Budapest: more than just a postcard
Like all great cities, Budapest has two faces: one for visitors, and another — richer and more interesting — for those who take the time to explore it a little deeper.
The good news? That local side is surprisingly easy to discover.
