Sakura Festival in Budapest – Cherry Blossom Celebration at the ELTE Botanical Garden
Every spring, the cherry trees of the ELTE Botanical Garden burst into bloom, bringing with them one of Budapest’s most atmospheric seasonal events: the Sakura Festival. Inspired by the Japanese tradition of ohanami — the celebration of cherry blossoms — this beloved event invites visitors to slow down and enjoy the beauty of nature in a truly special setting.
During the festival weekend, the garden transforms into a peaceful picnic spot where guests can spread out blankets beneath the flowering trees, relax with friends or family, and admire the delicate pink blossoms. The atmosphere captures the spirit of the Japanese springtime custom of gathering outdoors to appreciate the fleeting beauty of the sakura.
Alongside the blossom viewing, the festival also offers a rich programme celebrating Japanese culture. Visitors can take part in introductory Japanese language sessions, watch traditional music performances and martial arts demonstrations, and learn about classic board games such as Go. The programme also features concerts, a haiku competition, and an ikebana exhibition with workshops for those interested in the art of Japanese flower arranging.
With its combination of nature, culture, and a relaxed springtime atmosphere, the Sakura Festival at the ELTE Botanical Garden is a unique way to experience a touch of Japan in the heart of Budapest.
