Looking for a Christmas market in Budapest that feels a little less touristy? Head to Óbuda.
While Vörösmarty Square and the Basilica attract visitors from all over the world, Advent Óbudán has a much more local, community-focused feel. Located around the charming cobblestoned Fő tér in Budapest’s District III, it is the kind of Christmas event where you are just as likely to see local families meeting friends as visitors discovering a new part of the city.
And this is actually one of my personal favorites.
The historic Fő tér makes a lovely setting for the festivities, with its old-town atmosphere, decorated buildings and Christmas lights. It is a little farther from the usual tourist routes, but that is exactly what makes it worth the trip.
What to expect at Advent Óbudán
The Advent Óbudán program brings together a Christmas market, food and drinks, an ice rink, concerts and family activities.
You can browse handmade gifts and Christmas decorations, stop for a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate, and try some typical Hungarian Christmas-market treats. The food selection has included favorites such as kürtőskalács, roasted chestnuts, lángos, churros and other warm street-food options.
The free outdoor ice rink is another big part of the event. In previous years, the rink at Fő tér has been open throughout the Advent period and attracted both children and adults. The 2026 event will again feature a daily ice rink.
Advent Óbudán 2026
The 2026 edition starts on November 27 and will once again bring the Advent season to Fő tér and its surroundings. The program will include the Christmas market, an ice rink, weekend concerts and family activities.
Weekends are when the square really comes alive, with a changing mix of concerts, family activities and other festive programs.
For current dates, programs, opening hours and other practical information, visit the official Advent Óbudán website.

How to get there
Advent Óbudán takes place around Fő tér in Óbuda’s District III, outside the main tourist center. The easiest way to get there is by public transportation. Take the H5 suburban railway (HÉV) to Szentlélek tér, then walk a few minutes to Fő tér. Several buses and trams also serve the area.
If you are coming from central Budapest, allow a little extra time for the journey. It is not far, but you are definitely leaving the usual city-center Christmas market route behind – which is part of the appeal.
If you’ve already visited the big Christmas markets in the city center, Advent Óbudán is a great way to experience a more local side of Budapest during the festive season.
