If you want to discover a different side of Budapest, head south to Budafok for the annual Budafok Wine and Sparkling Wine Festival. Every September, the streets, squares, courtyards, and historic wine cellars of Budapest’s XXII district come alive with wine, sparkling wine, music, food, and a wonderfully relaxed festival atmosphere.
Budafok has a long and fascinating connection with wine. Beneath the district lies an extensive network of historic cellars, while generations of winemakers have helped establish the area as one of Budapest’s most important wine-producing districts. During the festival, this heritage becomes the backdrop for a weekend of tastings, concerts, cultural programs, and cellar experiences.
The festival takes place across several locations, including Városház tér, Piactér, Oroszlános Udvar, Szieszta Pont, and Szent István tér, with additional programs hosted by local wineries, cultural venues, and other partners. This means there is no single festival ground to explore. Instead, you can wander between the different locations and discover what is happening around the neighborhood.
Wine and sparkling wine are, naturally, at the heart of the experience. Local wineries and producers offer tastings, while the festival provides a chance to discover Hungarian wines in the very district that has played such an important role in Budapest’s wine culture. And if you are more of a “tell me what I should try” wine drinker than a person who can identify twelve different aromas with their eyes closed, don’t worry. This is a festival, not a wine exam.
There is plenty happening beyond the tasting glasses, too. The festival features live music and performances across its different stages, with everything from jazz and world music to pop, folk, and larger evening concerts. The 2026 program includes performances by artists and groups such as Cimbali Band, Góbé, Sárik Péter Trió & Berki Tamás, Budafok Big Band, Irigy Hónaljmirigy, and many others.
Families are also well catered for. During the weekend, the Gyermekliget at Szent István tér offers interactive programs, music, creative activities, storytelling, and performances for children, making the festival an option for a family day out as well.
One of the most interesting things about the event is the opportunity to explore some of the less familiar corners of Budafok. The festival’s partner programs include museums, historic sites, wine cellars, churches, and other local venues. Some are open especially for the festival weekend, giving visitors the chance to combine wine tasting with a little bit of local history and exploration.
So don’t think of this as a festival where you simply find a table, order a glass, and stay there all afternoon. Come with comfortable shoes and a little curiosity. Follow the music, peek into a cellar, discover a new Hungarian wine, grab something to eat, and see where the evening takes you.
The Budafok Wine and Sparkling Wine Festival is a great way to experience a part of Budapest that many visitors never get around to exploring. It’s local, lively, a little different from the usual city-centre attractions, and very much about enjoying the moment.
Why go?
Because sometimes the best Budapest experiences happen outside the obvious tourist routes. If you like wine, music, local culture, and discovering neighborhoods with a story to tell, Budafok is well worth the trip.
