Budapest’s Lukács Thermal Bath is one of the city’s most authentic and underrated spa experiences. Long before it became a place for leisurely soaking, Lukács served as a healing sanctuary with a history stretching back to the 12th century.

A Bath with Centuries of Healing Tradition

As early as the Middle Ages, the Knights of the Order of St. John settled in this area and created a healing oasis for the sick, making use of the naturally warm thermal waters. During the Ottoman era, the springs were transformed into Turkish-style baths and were also used to power mills for grinding wheat and producing gunpowder.

Later, the baths became city property and were sold to Fülöp Palotay, who transformed the site into a modern spa and healing complex. He built a spa hotel, established a hydrotherapy department, and completely redesigned the pools, naming the complex after Saint Luke (Lukács).

When the bath opened to the public, visitors arrived from all over hoping to be cured by the famous waters. To this day, one of the exterior walls of the spa is covered with plaques sent by grateful guests, thanking the bath for their recovery, a touching reminder of Lukács’ healing legacy.

One of Budapest’s Best-Value Thermal Baths

Over the decades, Lukács Thermal Bath has been expanded and modernised, yet it has managed to retain its authentic, local atmosphere. It is often considered one of the most affordable thermal baths in Budapest, making it a favorite among locals who prefer substance over spectacle.

While Széchenyi and Gellért (closed for extensive renovations) Baths may attract most tourists, Lukács is a true hidden gem: less crowded, more health-focused, and deeply rooted in Hungarian bathing culture.

A Health-Oriented Spa Experience

Lukács is known as the most health-oriented of Budapest’s major baths. In addition to its indoor and outdoor thermal pools, it offers:

  • medical and therapeutic massages;
  • a Kneipp pool;
  • a salt chamber; and
  • wellness and rehabilitation services.

The outdoor thermal pools are especially popular year-round, providing a relaxing escape whether you visit in summer or winter.

Bathing Culture in Hungary

Hungary has a long and proud tradition of thermal bathing. The country sits on one of the richest geothermal and medicinal water reserves in the world, and bathing culture here goes back over 2,000 years. Romans, Ottomans, and Hungarians alike discovered and used these healing waters.

Visiting Budapest is simply not complete without soaking in a thermal bath, and Lukács offers a more authentic, local, and budget-friendly alternative to the city’s most famous spas.
