One of my personal favorites among Budapest’s Christmas markets, the Advent Basilica takes over Szent István Square in front of the impressive St. Stephen’s Basilica every winter. With the Basilica as its backdrop, handmade Hungarian products, festive food and drinks, Christmas lights and daily programs come together to create one of the city’s most atmospheric places to get into the holiday spirit.
Whether you are looking for Christmas gifts, want to try some Hungarian winter specialties or simply fancy a walk through a beautifully decorated square, this is an easy stop to add to your Budapest winter itinerary.
What to expect at Advent Basilica
The market brings together nearly a hundred Hungarian craft exhibitors, including ceramicists, jewelry makers, leather craftsmen and designers. Their handmade products make it a good place to look for something more personal than the usual souvenir-shop gifts.
Food is, of course, another important part of the experience. Along with traditional Hungarian winter flavors, you can find Hungarian specialties and plenty of festive treats and drinks. So come hungry – Budapest Christmas markets are definitely not the place for a strict diet.
The square is also home to a huge Christmas tree, a monumental Advent wreath and a traditional nativity scene in front of the Basilica. One of the highlights is the daily light painting projected onto the façade of St. Stephen’s Basilica from 5:30 PM, with musical concerts preceding the show on selected days.
And the best part? Entry to the Christmas market is free.
