Every August, the historic Buda Castle turns into a lively celebration of Hungarian folk art, traditional craftsmanship, music, and dance. The Festival of Folk Arts, known in Hungarian as Mesterségek Ünnepe, has been bringing master craftsmen and visitors together since 1987 and has become one of Budapest’s best-known celebrations of Hungarian cultural heritage.
The festival offers a chance to see traditional crafts not simply displayed, but actually being made. Craftspeople bring their workshops to the Castle District and demonstrate techniques that have been passed down through generations. Visitors can watch masters at work and, in many cases, try their hand at traditional crafts themselves. Depending on the year, you may come across everything from pottery, woodcarving, weaving, embroidery, and leatherwork to basket making, blacksmithing, instrument making, and other fascinating crafts.
There is much more to the festival than handicrafts. Throughout the event, stages around the Castle host Hungarian and international folk musicians, singers, and dancers, while storytelling, children’s activities, puppet shows, street performances, and folk dance events add to the festive atmosphere. In the evenings, visitors can even join traditional dance-house programs and experience Hungarian folk culture rather than simply watching it from the sidelines.
The festival also provides a wonderful opportunity to discover Hungarian folk art as a living tradition. Alongside the demonstrations and performances, craftspeople sell their handmade work, so you can take home something genuinely connected to Hungarian craftsmanship rather than another mass-produced souvenir.
One of the highlights traditionally takes place on August 20, when Hungary celebrates St. Stephen’s Day. The festival marks the occasion with the procession of the masters and the traditional blessing of the new bread, connecting the celebrations in the Castle District with one of Hungary’s most important national holidays.
And then there is the setting. Wandering through the historic streets and squares of Buda Castle, listening to folk music, watching craftsmen work, and discovering traditional Hungarian art makes the Festival of Folk Arts a particularly atmospheric way to experience Budapest in summer.
Whether you are interested in Hungarian culture, looking for an unusual Budapest experience, or simply curious to see how things were made before everything came with a “Made in…” label, the Festival of Folk Arts is well worth adding to your August plans.
